The communities of Kerrobert, Luseland, Major, Denzil & Macklin have joined together to present a Christmas Cantata: Joy to the World! What a wonderful example of working together to celebrate the Christ Child!

The Cantata will be in Kerrobert Sunday, December 11 at 7 PM at the Prairieland Community Centre.

Ecumenical Ladies Christmas Supper

The annual Ecumenical Ladies gathering at Christmas time is being hosted by the Kerrobert United Church this year. We will be NOT be doing gift exchange OR potluck, but instead having a catered meal for $10 each, followed by a speaker from the Leipzig Serenity Retreat and caroling.

The evening starts at 5:30PM Wednesday December 7th, with Marlene's punch! Supper to follow.

Please let Marj know if you are going to attend so she can have numbers for the caterer.

Centennial Celebrations in July

At our church council meeting on Monday, it was suggested that we put together a slide show of photos of weddings held in our church, and/or baptisms/ confirmations and other assorted photos.

SO if you have any photos you care to share with us for this presentation, please email them to me and we will see they get put on the slide show.

Sometime over the weekend of July, 22, 23, and 24th, the church will be open for folks to wander in and visit, or just sit in the presence, or have coffee and remember days gone by. At that time, there will be slide presentation running with photos of weddings etc playing. Maybe we can have a time slot to honor all those who were married in the Kerrobert United Church!! A time to renew vows as we move forward in our lives.

February Services

WE ARE SO LUCKY to have good worship leadership each and every Sunday.

February 6th and 13th are being led by Bill Thomson. Bill is a rancher/farmer with a down to earth approach to faith. A fluent speaker, who keeps everyone awake.

February 20th our worship is being led by Brian Watson, from Elrose. He has been a farmer, a multi talented man, who is also the chair of Presbytery.

February 27th is our own Shauna Meek. Shauna is gifted in so many ways, and is always a delight to have her lead our worship service

Remember church starts at 10 am on Sunday Morning, with coffee following the service. This is a great time to be together, and catch up with one and another.

WOW are the newest renovations to OUR church beautiful. Yes, there still is a long way to go. Maybe I can post pictures soon. The flooring is in the main part of the basement, and the gyproc has been done in both offices (with a bit more to do on that). IT is so exciting!!! NOW to find somebody to do the painting!!! (with a high scaffel!!!)

SUNDAY, January 30th. This is the FIFTH Sunday of the month, and so we get to worship with a wider community. The service is at 11 AM, at the Luseland United church with Bill Thomson as the guest speaker. If the gravevine is right, we will celebrate THE STORY with communion. This is the sunday when the Superb Mennonite Church joins the Luseland United, and the Kerrobert United church folks to lift our voices in praise, and be together.

There is a potluck lunch following this service, so please bring a little something. We are asked to bring salads, or buns, or desert, or pickles,or cake, AND the Luseland folk will provide the Hot stuffs!!!

Advent Greetings!

Last Sunday we heard Jesus say "always be ready" (Matthew 24: 36-44) and
this week we hear John the Baptist tell us to "prepare the way of the
Lord" (Matthew 3: 1-12.)

The Very Rev. David Giuliano reminded me recently of a line about
Protestants that many of us relate to: "Jesus is coming. Look busy!"

Our church culture (as mainstream culture) draws us into much busyness.
To 'always be ready' and 'prepare the way of the Lord' justifies much of
our activity as people of Christ. Yet there are also other ways to ready
ourselves and prepare the way of Christ.

My daily prayers for the church (for you and for me), during this Advent
season are focused on preparing the way of the Lord within; in
contemplative ways and not only active ones. I pray that we will prepare
for the way of the Lord in our hearts and minds as well as in our many
activities.

The speed at which we move is often too costly for God's world and for
ourselves. May we move at Spirit's pace this Advent.

And may God's goodness be magnified in us, inspired by how God's
goodness was magnified in Mary, making way for the full life of God.

It’s hard to say goodbye to Saskatchewan Conference after a wonderful week of visiting.

Mike Milne of The United Church Observer joined me at the Winnipeg train station a week ago Monday to travel on the “Spirit Express” for the first few days of my Saskatchewan Conference visits, beginning with our stop in Melville. The train arrived early yet again, as it has everywhere so far. Not only has VIA Rail been on time, but its generosity in providing the Moderator with a free pass for the “Spirit Express” has also been applauded at every mention.

Hospitality in this Conference was much warmer than temperatures during the first part of the week. Blizzard-like conditions had us staying overnight with Jerry and Janet Kenniston in Kipling following the town hall, to which almost 60 people braved the blowing snow and treacherous sidewalks and roads.

The next day we headed for Regina—slowly—and not without adventure. We had to be dug out of a snow drift on the highway. Staying on the road was in itself an achievement. Thank goodness Executive Secretary Bill Doyle is such a careful driver, and Saskatchewan drivers are accustomed to jumping out to help others.

Intergenerational and intercultural opportunities were inspiring in events such as

town hall meetings in Kipling, Kindersley, and Saskatoon
a Regina meeting with CGIT girls and leaders
learning in Melville about SARCAN, Saskatchewan’s unique approach to recycling, which for years has benefited community members with intellectual challenges
a city-wide environmental fair in Regina
a “Soul, Community, and Creation” evening at St. Paul’s United in support of Saskatoon’s Integrated Community Ministry
the blessing of a new wing at Oliver Lodge, followed by an evening with River Bend Presbytery in celebration with music, word, and drama on how “Home is where the heart is,” being at home in our bodies, our faith, with the earth, and in God
a day at Craik Eco-Centre and Eco-Village with Multi-Faith Saskatchewan, dedicating a designated sacred space with representatives of more than 10 different faith/spiritual traditions (someday soon a solar-powered fountain will be added to this sacred space; find more information and photos of the event)

Memories of many met at these gatherings keep flooding my mind, such as these few:

John, a young adult in Regina who’s begun a car share cooperative, speaking up about the important role religious leaders must play in care of creation
Christopher, a tween who’s caring for creation in all kinds of ways and spoke of his congregation’s pilgrimage of presence to Fort McMurray
Alexander, a babe in arms, the centre of the community as he sleeps in the midst of loud and lively children and adults dancing and swirling ’round
Sheila, the granddaughter of the fourth Moderator of The United Church of Canada, Edmund H. Oliver, in whose name Oliver Lodge provides special care for elderly residents
Willa Karnan, resident of Oliver Lodge and long-time United Church overseas personnel, who greeted me in Korean
6-year-old Hannah, who shared in a dramatic Halloween-related dialogue with me in worship at Grosvenor Park United in Saskatoon
Janet Sigurdson, a minister weaving the gifts of her Aboriginal community with those of her farming community
Nathaniel, a university student focused on religious and environmental studies and finding a new home community in his United Church congregation, far from his family home in Sudan
Zarqa Nawaz, one of the creators of Little Mosque on the Prairie

The connecting tissue among soul, community, and creation has been evident in all of these encounters and more, reminding me of words from Revelation 21:3–5 as paraphrased by Eugene Peterson:

I heard a voice thunder: “Look! Look! God has moved into the neighbourhood, making a home with men and women and children. We belong to one another and to all creation.”

I have a strong sense of belonging to those I’m visiting throughout these four Conferences this month. As we sing, pray, and share stories of suffering and hope, that sense of belonging to one another and to all creation deepens. And the practice of belonging to one another as community and creation brings varied healing blessings. Thanks be to God.

Now I’m rolling into the Edmonton train station at almost 7:00 a.m., anticipating more encounters and stories.

Making Connections

Our global partners and overseas personnel extend our family ties around the world. From urban centres to small towns to rural and remote communities, we are all connected.

This June 10, The United Church of Canada’s 85th Anniversary is a time to remember, renew, rejoice—and make new connections!

Beginning in March we will be inviting you to participate in a special anniversary initiative called Making Connections. Our hope is that you will use the time leading up to Anniversary Sunday on June 6 to initiate and nurture a new relationship with a “distant relative” in the United Church.

To do this we will randomly pair United Church pastoral charges, community ministries, global partners, and overseas personnel with one another. This means each pastoral charge, community ministry, global partner, and overseas personnel will have the potential to begin two new relationships: one with the ministry you are invited to connect with, and the other with the ministry that has been invited to connect with you."

The duties include getting and sorting mail, booking pulpit supply, arranging funerals, weddings, baptisms, renting church, preparing bulletins, keeping statistics, and records up to date, take minutes at board meetings, plus regular office work. This job would average about 2 - 3 hours per week. For more info call the church office. This position starts the 1st of july, with very minimal duties until August. Please consider this.

SUNDAY, APRIL 18th at 11 am, "the Good News ensemble" will be leading worship. They are nine or ten singers and musicians who travel from church to church once per month with an upbeat and encouraging Good News message. Their presentation is a jazz, swing, and soft-rock gospel sound. This group was formed in 2002. This group is under the direction of Lorne Reinheimer. PLEASE join us sunday morning at 11 am.

Oh,yes, there is a potluck lunch after church so you can meet and greet the singers/musicians.

Hosting Presbytery

Kerrobert United Church will host the Presbytery meeting on Saturday, Feb. 21st.

We will supply coffee & goodies in the morning & mid-afternoon, as well as lunch for those attending, so be prepared for a phone call asking for volunteer time or goodies.

Billets are needed for the weekend: one billet for a lady for Friday, and one billet for a man for Saturday. Please let Marj know if you are able to billet someone on those days.

Sunday, December 14th Candlelight Carol Fest at 7Pm in the Catholic Church of the Assumption. Admission by donation. All funds raised are being donated to the Kerrobert Food Bank. If you want to hear your favourite choirs from our area, this is the only event to attend!

Sunday School

Sunday School will resume on December 2nd at 10 am. The young folk will help with the Advent candle lighting tradition, and remain in the worship service until after the "theme time" when they will depart and go to the lower hall for their own time of worshipping and learning together. As of this moment it looks like Sunday, December 16th will be "Children's Sunday". It is a busy, but also an exciting time for the young people, as they learn about the LOVE that came to earth that first Christmas morning more than 2000 years ago.

Advent Retreat

On the months that there are 5 Sundays, Superb Mennonite Church, Luseland United Church, and Kerrobert United church worship together.
This time this joint service is being hosted by the Kerrobert United Church.
The service will be at 10 am. and following this service, there will be a luncheon. Kerrobert folk are invited to bring a crock pot of soup/ crackers, and the others are invited to bring finger foods, such as sandwiches, buns, vegies, fruit, cheese, or desserts.
These times of worshipping together are GREAT!!! SPiritually, and socially filling.

Jamboree Days are coming fast! Next Sunday, we've agreed to serve the pancake breakfast at the fairgrounds from 8:30 to 10:30 AM before the Cowboy Church Service at 11 AM.

Places to worship

Since our church will be closed for worship during July, you may want to worship with another congregation.
Superb Mennonite Church will be doing a study over summer, with service time at 10:30. NOTE: They will be closed on July 1st.
Kerrobert Roman Catholic Church worships at 9 am Sunday mornings, and would be happy to have you worship with them.

JULY 29th...This is a fifth Sunday joint worship service. The Luseland United, Kerrobert United, as well as the Superb Mennonite join together for worship on all the 5th SUndays. July 29th the service will be at Superb Mennonite church. There will be a potluck lunch following this service. ALL are welcome!!

August 5th Kerrobert United will re-open for services. August will be celebrated as an ecumenical month of worship. Lois Siemens will be the worship leader on the 5th and 19th, Felicitas Drobig will be our worship leader on August 26th. Mark your calendars.
